Cymraeg Bob Dydd

11 March 2015

Recently IAITH ran a workshop in the Urdd Centre at Cardiff Bay. The Urdd project ‘Cymraeg Bob Dydd’ were hosting an event promoting bilingualism amongst Welsh second language students.

Cymraeg Bob Dydd

Presentations were given by individuals who had studied Welsh as a second language but had gone on to study further and to work through the medium of Welsh. Lowri Walters, a Young Welsh actress who will be appearing in the stage production of Warhorse discussed how being bilingual had supported her to find work in the very competitive world of performing arts.

IAITH contributed by running a workshop that discussed the benefits of bilingualism. We also discussed bilingualism and multilingualism across Europe and how we in Wales fit into that European picture. The students were also given an opportunity to discuss their own feelings and attitudes towards bilingualism and their Welsh identity.

Without doubt the highlight of the event was a visit by the famous radio DJ Huw Stephens. The students were interested to hear how the Welsh language helped him to reach his present post at BBC Radio 1.  Huw Stephens also stressed how important it was for him to continue to work on BBC Radio Cymru and to lead a completely bilingual life.

Thank you to the Urdd for inviting us to this important and interesting event.
