“Two Challenges– Welsh Language Standards and the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act”

Conwy Business Centre
9:30 am - 13:00 pm, 15 October 2015

AIMED AT?

These seminars will be of particular interest to Officers of organisations which will be required to adopt Welsh Language Standards and organisations required to comply with the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act.

PURPOSE:

These seminars will be held during an important period next October, when the first group of public bodies will have newly received formal Notifications from the Welsh Language Commissioner to implement Welsh Language Standards.  At the same time, implementation of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act will be the subject of an ongoing consultation exercise by the Welsh Government.  The aim of these seminars is to bring together relevant officers to receive information and discuss matters relating to these two challenges.  As both sets of challenges arise from Welsh Government legislation, officers of the Government have been invited to present an overview of both contexts, and the inter-relationship between them.

Responding to the Welsh Language Standards:

What are the main challenges foreseen regarding implementation of the Standards by the first group of public bodies to be implementing them?

  • Presentation from the regulator’s perspective by a representative of the Welsh Language Commissioner.

  • Presentation from a Local Authority perspective: Gwenllian Mair Williams, Welsh Language Development Officer, Workplace, Hunaniaith, Cyngor Gwynedd

Responding to the language related aspects of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act:

Sections of this Act have implications for language planning within both public sector bodies and other organisations outside the ambit of the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011. The question arising from the linguistic implications is: what is the inter-relationship between Welsh Language Standards and the relevant sections of the?  Both seminars to include:

  • Presentation by Huw Charles,  Environment and Sustainability Directorate, Welsh Government
  • Presentation by a representative of the Welsh Government’s Welsh Language Division
  • Presentation by Mike Palmer, Sustainable Development Manager - Wales Audit Office.  How will ‘sustainable decisions’ be regulated under this Act – including linguistically sustainable development?
