IAITH were commissioned some months previously to undertake a review of the current language planning situation in Cornwall and prepare a strategy for the coming decade. With the sun emerging from the morning’s dramatic eclipse, the strategy was approved unanimously by the Partnership members.

The strategy was authored by Gareth Ioan (IAITH CEO) and Meirion Prys Jones (CEO for NPLD). “Stiff challenges face the supporters of Cornish”, says Gareth. “But the dedication, energy and commitment of the language movement there was an inspiration”.

Although the numbers are hard to verify, there are some 500 speakers of Cornish presently. Large first strides have been taken in terms of bilingual signs and Cornish is seen on marketing material locally. Classes for Cornish learners are held in all corners of the peninsular”.
